What is menstrual flow?

Menstrual flow is the periodic discharge from the vagina of uterine lining and blood that you experience during menstruation. And there are many types of flow! Some women have very liquid discharge, others viscous discharge, some with clots, less, medium, or more abundant flow.

A typical amount of menstrual fluid lost during menstruation is between 5 ml and 80 ml.

A scanty menstrual flow is when the bleeding is less than 30 ml of fluid per cycle.

An average flow is between 30 and 50 ml.

An abundant flow is between 50-80 ml.

What is menstrual flow? | Libreria Our customers are delighted with our reusable pads that allow them to change them in the middle of the day.

If it is difficult for you to determine which menstrual flow you have, you can figure it out depending on how many pads you use throughout a cycle, of course, depending on the level of absorption and their size.

A small absorbent can hold 3ml of liquid and a large one can absorb up to 12ml of liquid.

As a rule, the limit of a regular day absorbent is 5 ml of liquid, and the limit of a night absorbent is 10-15 ml.

Now, depending on how often you change your pads, you can estimate which category you fall into: low, medium or heavy flow.

How do you recognize reduced menstrual flow?

  • You rarely change your tampons/absorbents because you don't need to
  • You do not have a heavy flow during the first 2 days of your period, but a reduced but constant one
  • You have spotting-like bleeding instead of steady bleeding.

How do you recognize the average menstrual flow?

People who eliminate 30-50 ml of fluid and have a period lasting between 3-5 days have a average menstrual flow. If you are not experiencing severe abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, or other symptoms, the amount of menstrual fluid you shed may be average.

Remember that it always looks like more blood than it actually is.

How do you recognize heavy menstrual flow?

From a medical point of view, a heavy period means a blood loss of more than 80 ml per cycle, it means that you need more than 16 tampons or absorbents per cycle .

Excessive menstrual bleeding can indicate a certain hormonal imbalance, but it can also have other causes such as:

  • Adenomyosis: A condition that occurs when glands in the endometrium become embedded in the uterine muscle
  • Endometriosis: tissue grows outside the uterus, lining it and causing heavy bleeding with each period
  • Pregnancy complications
  • If your period is more than 15 days late and is met with heavy flow, this could indicate a miscarriage. In this case we recommend you take a pregnancy test.
  • Post-partum haemorrhage: caused by insufficient contraction of the uterus after removal of the placenta
  • Polyps: Small growths on the lining of the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Presence of an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Other abnormalities or medical problems.
